The Northern Blues have completed the signing of Cameron O’Shea ahead of the upcoming season.
O’Shea complements the signings of fellow AFL-experienced duo Alex Browne and Luke Russell, with the new recruit looking to lock down a defensive post in 2017.
O’Shea played 81 AFL games across six seasons at Port Adelaide, flourishing in the environment of finals football in 2013 and 2014.
The 24-year-old enjoyed a career-best season in 2013, playing every game (including two finals) as a defender capable of matching up against any opponent and providing offensive rebound.
General Manager Garry O’Sullivan said he “couldn’t hide his excitement” that O’Shea had committed to the club for next year.
“We’re really pumped to announce Cameron is the newest player of our football club,” O’Sullivan said.
“It’s an outstanding result for the club, his experience and talent will be invaluable for our group.
“To welcome him alongside Alex Browne and Luke Russell in one off-season, we’re confident it’ll hold us in good stead and put us in a really competitive position in 2017.”
Crediting the investment of the Carlton Football Club, O’Sullivan said all at Preston City Oval were overjoyed that the trio – all of AFL pedigree – had nominated the Blues as a destination club for 2017.
“Carlton made initial contact with Cam about being with us next year and we followed it up from there: he had some meetings with Josh Fraser and Brad Wilson and we’re stoked he saw us as the best fit,” O’Sullivan said.
“We haven’t welcomed three players with AFL experience in my time here one after the other, it’s just fantastic and we’re really excited with the prospect of Cameron pulling on a Northern Blues jumper.”
O’Shea joins former Port Adelaide teammate Sam Russell at the Blues, and will fill the void of the retired Kieran McGuinness alongside the likes of promising pair Kye Declase and Bailey Jordan.
O’Sullivan said O’Shea would play a vital role for Northern in 2017 as the club sets its sights on a climb up the ladder under senior coach Josh Fraser.
“There is something in that we needed to find someone to fill in the void of Kieran McGuinness, and Cam will definitely offer us a lot,” O’Sullivan said.
“He has experience on some bigger bodies in the AFL and he’s a very capable runner, which’ll be a real bonus for us.
“Cam’s shown us what he can do over six years at Port Adelaide where he’s played some very good footy down back, especially in the pressure cooker of finals.”
