The Northern Blues six-match winning streak has come to an end at the hands of the Werribee Tigers at Ikon Park today.

After a fast start, the Blues were left to rue a disappointing second and third quarters, ultimately succumbing to a 15. 13. (103) to 18. 9. (117) defeat.

The Blues burst out of the blocks to begin the game in what was a high scoring first quarter, as eleven goals were shared split 7-4 in favour of the Blues.

A late goal through Majak Daw brought the margin back, but a quick start — including a goal in the opening seconds to Kristian Jaksch — saw the Blues take a 22-point lead into the first change.

An early goal in the second quarter from Sam Kerridge gave the Blues their biggest lead of the match, but from there the in-form Werribee responded as the Blues knew they would.

Werribee forced themselves back into the contest, kicking the last four goals on the second term including one in the shadows of half-time to take a one-point lead into the main break.

Following half-time, the Blues were also two pivotal players down on the bench, with ruckmen Andrew Phillips and Daniel Gorringe both unable to return to the field through injury.

The Blues struggled to quell the offensive movement of the Tigers in the third quarter, who opened up what was ultimately a game-winning lead into the final change.

After a goal-for-goal start following the resumption of play, another four-goal run for Werribee saw them lead by 21 points.

18 inside 50s for the Tigers to Northerns’ eight led to a seven-goal-to-three term in favour of the travelling side to leave Northern a mammoth task in the final term.

Blues livewire Jarrod Pickett tried to spark his side into life after a courageous mark and goal in the first minute of the last quarter gave the Blues a sniff.

However, missed opportunities late left the Blues to rue what might have been, as despite a spirited end to the match Werribee held their nerve to win by 17 points.

Nick Graham again battled gamely in the heart of midfield with 28 disposals and two goals, while Rhys Palmer also continued his fine VFL form with 29 disposals and two goals.

The Northern Blues will look to return to winning ways next weekend when they head to Punt Road Oval on Sunday at midday to take on Richmond.
