The Northern Blues have pulled off a significant double coup for the 2019 season, retaining the services of Sam Fisher and Jesse Palmer.

After both enjoying strong maiden years at Northern, both Fisher and Palmer have put pen to paper to stay at the Blues for next season.

The pair share similar stories, having arrived at the Blues after stints at AFL clubs this time 12 months ago. Fisher arrived from the Sydney Swans rookie list, while Palmer played three games with Port Adelaide.

The duo took to the VFL competition from the outset, becoming consistent contributors for Northern. They were a big part of the Blues’ late-season resurgence, where Northern won four of its last six games.

Fisher’s numbers alone saw him rank alongside the VFL’s best midfielders, averaging 21 disposals, 11 contested possessions and seven tackles per game. He would go onto finish second in the Club’s Laurie Hill Trophy.

Palmer was Northern’s number one outlet for goals in 2018, starting with four goals against then-reigning premiers Port Melbourne in Round 4. His 27 goals saw him named at centre-half-forward in the VFL Team of the Year.

Both players said they were delighted to head into year two with the Northern Blues.

“I’m stoked to have re-signed. I have made a lot of good mates and think the group as a whole has built strong relationships over the course of the year,” Fisher said.

“I believe this group is capable of building on what we showed in 2018, and make an impact on the competition come finals next year.”

“The club has done everything right by me and helped me transition to Melbourne. ‘Frase’ is building a good brand which will see us get some success soon with this group,” Palmer said.

“There’s already been a number of us re-commit, which is exciting — the core group we have here is really strong.

“I love the young group of guys and coaches we have, I’m looking forward to seeing how it all develops.”

The latest re-signings brings it up to six players who have committed to the Blues for next year, alongside youngsters Max Dreher, Jordan Lynch, Ethan Penrith and Jean-Luc Velissaris.
