Mason Blakey and Fraser Pearce will return to play for the Northern Blues next year.

Mason Blakey and Fraser Pearce will return for their third seasons at the Northern Blues in 2019.

Having arrived at Preston City Oval for the start of the 2017 season, Blakey and Pearce have embraced the culture of the club and will once again wear blue next year.

The pair formed part of Northern’s leadership group in the season just gone, with Blakey one of three young vice captains.

Still just 20 years of age, Blakey played every senior game for Northern in 2018, impressing as a lockdown defender who refuses to be beaten in the contest.

His status as a young leader has gone from strength-to-strength since arriving from the Northern Knights, where he was captain back in 2016.

Blakey’s commitment to the Blues has been reflected after he was awarded the Best Clubman award in 2017, following by the Bullants Spirit award in two months ago.

Pearce will also front up for year number three on Northern’s list, where he has played 13 games — including nine in 2018.

Previously at Port Melbourne, Pearce has set his sights on building his game as a hard-running midfielder, capable of playing a number of roles for the team.

He was rewarded with a role in the leadership group in 2018, and has impressed in the early goings of pre-season over the last few weeks.

General Manager Ben Brennan said the Club was thrilled to welcome back the two young leaders.

“To have Mason and Fraser recommit for season 2019 is really pleasing for our football club and affirmation of where we are heading,” Brennan said.

“They’re both strong leaders despite still being quite young in football terms, and they add to the culture of our group through hard work and commitment to the Club.

“We’re delighted that they will once again play for the Northern Blues next year, as we continue to retain our key talent who will be crucial in driving the Club forward.”

Blakey and Pearce join Max Dreher, Sam Fisher, Jordan Lynch, Jesse Palmer, Ethan Penrith and Jean-Luc Velissaris as re-signings, as well as former Western Bulldog Kieran Collins on the 2019 list.
